Vol 10, No 3, Application Management in a Distributed, Object-Oriented Condition Monitoring System Vol 10, No 3, Application Management in a Distributed, Object-Oriented Condition Monitoring System
- Roger Atkinson, Paul Hawkins, Robin Hills and David Woollons, School of Engineering, University of Exeter and Allan Clearwaters and Rick Czaja, Helitune Ltd.

This paper describes some aspects of a software development toolkit for industrial condition monitoring and maintenance planning applications. The toolkit consists of a Graphical Workbench for designing and debugging an application, an Instancer for creating, re-configuring and closing down an application and a Run-Time System for the support of inter-object message passing. The software architecture of an application is a distributed client-server system and the object-oriented approach used allows the de-coupling of the structure of an application from the implementation of its components, thus promoting object re-use and application re-configurability. The main focus of this paper is on the implementation, re-configuration, monitoring and control of an application.

Vol 10, No 3, Implementation Of An Integrated Condition Based Maintenance Programme - Ian Ham, Mechanical Engineer, BP Exploration, Wytch Farm and Paul Shrieve, Managing Director, Condition Monitoring Division, ATL Consulting Services Ltd
A case study is presented of the planning and implementation of a comprehensive programme of condition based maintenance for a large onshore oilfield. The work was mainly directed at rotating machinery and at determining, for each item and for the plant as a whole, the most cost-effective integration of condition-based, scheduled and breakdown maintenance. The study focuses on machine criticality assessment and on a matrix analysis technique for assessing the most effective combination of CM techniques for each machinery type.

Vol 10, No 3, Overcoming The Difficulties of Implementing TPM in Europe - Ulf Karlsson and Örjan Ljungberg, Department of Operations Management and Work Organisation, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden Vol 10, No 3, Overcoming The Difficulties of Implementing TPM in Europe - Ulf Karlsson and Örjan Ljungberg, Department of Operations Management and Work Organisation, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
In European enterprises the implementation of overall, company-wide, philosophies like Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) has proved to be rather difficult. Managers, consultants and researchers, however, tend to focus on the success stories. Clearly, research on managing corporate change and on implementing TPM should focus on the barriers and obstacles such as those, for example, that have impeded the integration of maintenance activities into production work. European managers tend to focus on results rather than on long term activities for promoting change. In this study, the authors have identified topics of major importance in overcoming the difficulties of implementing TPM.

Vol 10, No 3, Integration of TPM Concepts in the Design of New Plant - Jean-Paul Manata, Marc Gabriel and Marie Christine Suhner CRAN; Denis Malon, UNIMETAL; Daniel Richet, ADEPA.
A review is given of an approach to integrating TPM concepts into the design of new, technologically advanced, plant - a very large electrical direct-current-operated, double vat, furnace. The use of Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis, Functional Analysis, experience transfer via Benchmarking, and other techniques, is discussed and design to facilitate operator self-maintenance is emphasised.

Vol 10, No 3, Moving From Maintenance Management To Asset Management - John Woodhouse, The Woodhouse Partnership Ltd Vol 10, No 3, Moving From Maintenance Management To Asset Management - John Woodhouse, The Woodhouse Partnership Ltd
The range of methodologies, software tools and visionary concepts continues to multiply. multiply.  This paper scans the areas of development and comments on their penetration and degrees of impact.  In many cases, the readiness to adopt a more Asset Management professionalism is a matter of overcoming interdepartmental barriers rather than just adopting some clever new technology.
