The analysis of operating experience - e.g. of failure and corrective maintenance reports - gives valuable information on equipment behaviour in its operational and maintenance environment. This knowledge can be used to reveal weaknesses and ageing of equipment, and to improve its reliability by planning more applicable and effective maintenance, inspection and proof-testing tasks. Reliability engineering offers systematic methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of equipment failures and maintenance tasks. These methods - e.g. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Corrective Maintenance Effect and Criticality Analysis (CMECA) - are commonly used in the equipment and systems design phase , but we can also apply them to the systematic analysis of operating experiences. In the case of nuclear power plants the failure reporting needed for such analysis can be obtained from their computerised failure reporting systems.

Vol 10, No 1, A Systematic Approach to Managing Risk - Reliability Centred Maintenance - Michael Knowles, Coopers & Lybrand Consulting
Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) is a systematic way of managing the risk of equipment failure. Its step-by-step application in the case of the hydraulic system of a 240 Tonne haul truck shows how it can be integrated with an organisations existing continuous improvement structures and tools, and can lead to significant cost savings and improved operational performance.

Vol 10, No 1, Creating a Pro-Active Maintenance Regime - Selecting and Implementing a Maintenance Review Programme - Dr Ian Kennedy, Director, Consultancy and Dr Tony Doyle, Consultant, WM Vol 10, No 1, Creating a Pro-Active Maintenance Regime - Selecting and Implementing a Maintenance Review Programme - Dr Ian Kennedy, Director, Consultancy and Dr Tony Doyle, Consultant, WM
The authors explain that a Review of Equipment Maintenance (REM) - an approach to the formulation of industrial maintenance strategy which incorporates elements of RCM and some of the ideas behind TPM - can address both the human-resource-related problems of maintenance and the technical ones. REM procedure is outlined and a short case-study given of its successful implementation at a major chemical process plant .

Vol 10, No 1, The Truth about Computer Systems and Performance Indicators in Maintenance Tony Geraghty, Principal Consultant, Kvaerner AM Ltd
For a number of years computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) have been the focus for companies wishing to improve their asset management strategy. During this period much has been promised but only a little has been learned, and even less has been delivered in terms of improved plant performance. This paper will examine some of the misconceptions about CMMS use and about the more common performance indicators. An assessment is then made of (a) the kind of information that can realistically be expected from a properly implemented system and (b) what needs to be done in order to make a difference.
