March means MAINTEC, and this issue contains a special 32-page pullout section previewing the 2003 MAINTEC Exhibition and Conference. If you're going to the show, this is a must to help plan your visit and get the most out of your time there.
Compressed air is often described as the "fourth utility". Our Big Picture interviewee, Derek Wilde, recently elected President of the British Compressed Air Society, expresses his views on the failure of the Government to speak the language of business, or to understand the importance of compressed air to industry. He also outlines the steps BCAS is taking to help rectify this.
Among those are the setting-up of training courses and in our Energy section, we hear from one of the first compressed air endusers to successfully take the BCAS diploma in Compressed Air Management. The boilers market is now moving strongly towards wall-hung condensing models and Richard Walker, of Potterton Commercial, explains why. Contract Energy Management is one of the best established forms of outsourcing, using the expertise of energy professionals to operate and maintain energy plant at maximum efficiency. It is particularly effective for institutions, such as prisons and hospitals, allowing them to concentrate on core competencies.
"TPM" and "RCM" are words used like a mantra for improving plant underperformance, but are they really a universal panacea?, asks Ed Holden. Also in the Plant & Equipment section, we find how the right software program can improve asset management efficiency across a multi-site business, look at a new instrument for monitoring extremely slowly rotating machinery and a system for carrying out hydraulic fluid checks in-house. Plus the latest in low cost, on-line thermal measurement, choosing the right lubrication and delivery system and the emergence of partnering between drives manufacturers and service companies.
The Buildings section looks at the "high life" - training to use access equipment safely, the versatile scissor lift and the tough demands on cranes in some industrial environments. There are also some top tips on maintaining overhead conveyors.
Dry ice is best known for producing "mist", as a theatrical effect, but it can also be used for component cleaning, we discover in the Environmental Management section. Ways of dealing with dust and fumes in the workplace, particularly where vehicles are involved, are also examined. Lone workers are vulnerable and need to be able to keep in contact, on and off site; the latest DECT communications technology makes that possible. Other Health & Safety matters covered include reviews of different methods of machine guarding and safety lighting.
Related to this, Training looks at responsibilities under safety legislation relating to electrical equipment and how staff need to be trained to comply. We also discuss how to train the Autonomous Team and its role in plant management.
Finally, Maintenance Live is devoted to profiles of the three short-listed finalists for the 2002 IM&E Maintenance Professional of the Year Award (see also our Award webpage).
Launched in January 2001 by Conference Communication, Industrial Maintenance & Engineering is a bi-monthly magazine designed specifically to educate and inform maintenance professionals working in the industrial, commercial and public sectors, on how to reduce downtime, increase productivity and improve efficiency. It is the only business-to-business magazine sent to 15,000 named directors, managers and senior engineers, responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment, premises and facilities. The circulation has been selected from a database of 30,000 engineers and managers directly responsible for buying and specifying equipment, services and training, in the maintenance and plant management field.
David Willson, Managing Director of Conference Communication, says, "Having a dedicated maintenance magazine is a natural progression for the company and complements both the MAINTEC exhibition and our new interactive website www.maintenanceonline.co.uk". He adds that Conference Communication now fills a media void by offering this unique one-stop-shop [business magazine, technical subscription journal (MAINTENANCE & Asset Management), exhibition / conference (MAINTEC) and interactive website] both for advertisers to reach their target audience, and for maintenance professionals to have access to essential technical information and advice.
