Brunel’s Women in Engineering Scholarship Holders Begin Their Studies

FORTY UK and EU female graduate engineers began their MSc courses in a variety of disciplines at Brunel University London on Monday September 29, 2014 with each benefiting from a full fees and living costs scholarship courtesy of the UK Government’s Higher Education Funding Council for England – but open only to women applicants.

Under the Women in Engineering programme the scholars and 40 other female taught postgraduate students at Brunel will receive a year of mentoring support from senior engineers in industry, make a number of site visits and receive training support and the tools they need so they can become leaders and ambassadors for the profession.

STEM outreach projects to schools including Robo-code – an introduction to engineering thinking  and programming and learning how to teach welding with chocolate are also high on the students’ agenda.

Women in Engineering Lead at Brunel, Petra Gratton, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’re getting from our profession both in terms of volunteer mentors and in making sure other parts of the programme are fully supported.”
