Newey & Eyre lights the way for Birds Eye

Leading electrical wholesaler, Newey & Eyre has near completed a major project with well-known frozen food brand, Birds Eye to transform the lighting efficiency of its Lowestoft operation in a contract worth over £170k.

Taking up an extensive 28 acres, the Birds Eye Lowestoft site, which was established in 1949, is the company’s UK production facility employing 700 staff producing red meat, poultry, vegetables and fish, making it the town’s biggest employer.

Recently, the company had sought a solution to enable them to upgrade the lighting in the production areas of the site but to no avail; the main issue was having over 400 thirty-year-old light fittings semi-recessed into the ceiling which could not be removed without causing structural damage.

Upon recommendation, in late 2011 Birds Eye invited the business manager from the local Great Yarmouth branch of Newey & Eyre in to discuss available options. Following a consultation, he recommended the use of retrofit induction hibays in conjunction with lighting controls.  Six fittings were then trialled over a four month period where major energy-savings were rapidly realised.

Testament to the success of the pilot, Birds Eye called on Newey & Eyre to carry out a full survey into the site’s lighting requirements, going on to award the branch with the contract for the entire project.

Due for completion in September 2013, the project will see a complete modernisation of the site’s lighting with sustainable strategy taking precedence. Drawing on a vast international supplier base, from companies such as Dakal Lighting and Save it Easy, the Newey & Eyre team have supplied all the latest generation of energy-efficient lighting at every level including LED hibays, LED and induction floods, induction hibays, retro fit T5 kits together with a range of lighting controls.

Already the results have been profound, with energy consumption measured before and after the upgrade showing up to 50% reduction in energy use, while also improving lighting levels.

Steve Taylor, of the projects department at Birds Eye comments: “Having on numerous occasions tried to find a solution to upgrade the lighting of our production areas at Lowestoft, we were continuously told the work couldn’t be done without removing the original fittings which simply wasn’t an option for us.”

“From the offset, however, the expert team Newey & Eyre provided us with a quick and effective solution which could be retro-fitted thereby causing minimal disruption while ensuring drastically improved working environment.“

“Working with us at each stage of the project, more as part of our team rather than just a supplier, they have surpassed all expectations, during consultation, delivery and after sales service.  Not only are we experiencing significant energy and cost savings but the high quality light output has had a positive impact on overall productivity.”
