First for Hampshire Engineering Apprentice Provider

Southampton Engineering Training Association has become the first Apprenticeship provider in the UK to be accredited by The Institute of Measurement and Control.

The official body is the third professional engineering organisation to recognise the training provided by Hampshire-based SETA to its Apprentices.

“We’re very proud to get this accolade. The InstMC has accredited employers’ graduate schemes in the past but we’re the first Apprentice provider to be recognised for our training programme,” explained SETA Marketing Manager Claire Sutton.

“The Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers also recognise our Apprenticeships so for this third professional body to accredit our training we think demonstrates our commitment to providing the best engineering training and professional standards to our Apprentices.”

To achieve the accreditation, SETA was visited by the Institute which spent a day auditing its work by interviewing Apprentices, reviewing its Southampton training centre and examining coursework.

By reviewing the training in this way, SETA Apprentices can now apply for letters after their name when they successfully complete their Apprenticeship, which typically lasts between three to four years.

“This official recognition of our training will enable our Apprentices to apply to the Institute to use EngTech after their name, which is one of the first steps on the way to becoming a Chartered Engineer if they want to pursue professional status in this field.

“We work very hard to promote to our Apprentices that engineering is a great career choice that offers a huge range of opportunity throughout the rest of their working lives. Being recognised by the three main Engineering Institutes for our training is a good way to show our Apprentices the different avenues that a career in engineering will open up for them.

The Institute of Measurement and Control is a membership organisation which promotes the professional excellence of engineers and technologists at all levels in the automation, instrumentation, control and related industries.
